Nato a San Giovanni Lupatoto nel 1924, in quella "bassa" veronese di cui ha raccontato in tante sue foto con amore e sensibilità i paesaggi e le atmosfere, a diciott'anni ha conosciuto Malcesine e vi è rimasto per sempre. Ammaliato da una magia che ha colpito molti prima e dopo di lui, la stessa magia che ha colpito Goethe e legioni di turisti, ieri come oggi. E Malcesine gli ha ispirato foto che sono state esposte, ammirate e premiate in Italia e in molti paesi del mondo. Il suo nutrito curriculum testimonia di mostre, premi e segnalazioni in diversi paesi europei, ma anche in paesi come Brasile, Sud Africa, Stati Uniti d'America, Cina...
Emozioni sono in agguato in ognuna delle foto di Franco Toninelli, e tra tutte queste voglio accennare a quella forse più inaspettata: la gioia. La gioia che dà questo appassionante bianco e nero è quella che nasce dal sapere che ricordi, frammenti di vita, fatti e persone, esperienze, la natura e la bellezza condensate in immagini, che tutto questo non si perde col tempo.
Franco Toninelli è riuscito in tanti anni e in ogni stagione a cogliere e raccontare l'atmosfera di Malcesine. Come Faust ha fermato l'attimo, per renderlo immortale. Lui può forse darci il modo di penetrare nel mistero, nella magia di questo luogo che ha catturato Goethe, e attira tante persone costringendole ad ammirare, e poi a fermarsi o a ritornare. I malcesinesi stessi sono spesso inconsapevoli della bellezza, della magia del loro paese.
Per questo forse bisogna perdonarli se a volte non la considerano o non la rispettano come merita.

Photographic archive Franco Toninelli "1942 was a turning point in the life and career of Franco Toninelli. He was born in 1924 in San Giovanni Lupatoto, not far from the Veronese "low plains" that he made so many photos of, illustrating their landscape and atmosphere with great love and sensitivity. But when he was eighteen he met Malcesine and was charmed by the magic that has struck many before him, the same magic that enchanted Goethe and legion of tourists, yesterday and today. He lived in Malcesine from then until April 2003 when he died. He took inspired photographs of Malcesine, award-winning photos that have been exhibited and admired throughout Italy and in many European countries as well as countries such as Brazil, China, South Africa and the US... Emotions prey on us in each of Franco Toninelli's photographs. One of these emotions is joy which is perhaps the most unexpected. The joy coming from this impassioned black and white is the joy that springs from knowing that memories, fragments of life, facts and persons, experience, nature and the beauty condensed in images – that none of these is lost with the lapse of time. Franco Toninelli, over several decades, in every season, has succeeded in collecting and telling us of the atmosphere of Malcesine. As Faust did, he froze the moment to make it immortal. He can perhaps show us the way of penetrating the mystery and the magic of this place that captured Goethe and attracts so many people, forcing them to admire, to stop there and to come back. The townspeople of Malcesine themselves are often unaware of the beauty and the magic of their town. Perhaps this is a reason for forgiving them if, at any time, they ignore their town's beauty or do not respect it as they should. Once again we of Malcesine must remember how fortunate we are: here we share and enjoy the patient work and the art of Franco Toninelli."
